A team from the Labour Standards Development Authority in Sharjah has recently installed 10 labour libraries containing books in several languages in 10 labour camps in various industrial areas in Sharjah.
This has raised the number of labour libraries LSDA distributed so far at labour camps to 45 libraries which were provided with various sources of information in several languages, and were constantly updated for the benefit of workers from them. Work is also underway to prepare more such libraries.
The fixing of such libraries was part of a "Library in every labour camp" initiative, launched by LSDA in cooperation with the "Culture without Borders" initiative in Sharjah. It was also part of the LSDA’s strategic plan to spread awareness in labour camps and to ensure they meet the necessary standards.
LSDA Chairman His Excellency Salem Yousef Al Qaseer said by having this initiative, LSDA aimed to promote the culture of reading among workers, stressing that LSDA will install more labour libraries in more labour camps.
He said, " By launching such cultural activities, LSDA is inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and his instructions to integrate workers into the busy cultural life in Sharjah, and to boost the work environment in the Emirate of Sharjah." He thanked the "Culture without Borders" initiative in Sharjah for partnering with LSDA in the "private library in every labour camp" initiative.
As part of such a plan to involve workers in the cultural life of the Emirate of Sharjah, LSDA had also coordinated, for the third year in a row, the attendance of large numbers of workers at cultural seminars that were organized in their languages, at the 41st edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair at the Sharjah Expo Center.
LSDA has also been discussing with Kuttab Publishing, the launch of educational programs for workers in Sharjah, as an important initiative in encouraging workers to read and learn more.
